このように、魂がなにか（物や植物）に宿ったものが「つくも」です。魂は、精とジンによって構成されています。ジンは核のようなもの、エンジンの役割があります。精は水のようなものであり燃料という役割があります。また、精は水のようなものでジンはその中に溶け込んでいる状態です。ジンは失われる事はありませんが、精は時間経過と共に失われていきます。
今では誰も祭らなくなった神社では、精が失われてジンだけになり、干からびたものが宿った御神体のようなものが結構存在しています。また、信仰が集まるのを干からびたまま待っています。ジンは失われることがないので、そのまま残り続けます。
宿っているなぁと思った物を処分するにあたり、アイテムへの恐れがあったり、意識したり、気持ちを向けてしまうと対象に自分の魂は流れてしまいます。怯える事、信仰する事、依存する事、すべてにおいて対象に向けて魂が流れてしまいます。これは妖怪の仕業です。
干からびたアイテムや物は無害です。それにまた、魂（精）を注ぎ込まない限りは。
